Heatwave: 8 tips to protect your dog in summer
Tunisian summers can be tough on our companions. Here is how to prevent heatstroke.
Heatstroke is an emergency
Dogs barely sweat: they regulate their temperature by panting. Above 30 °C, the risk of heatstroke becomes real, especially for short-nosed breeds.
Our 8 tips
- Walk your dog early in the morning or after sunset.
- Test the asphalt with the back of your hand: if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for its paw pads.
- Always leave fresh water available (a fountain encourages drinking).
- Never leave your dog in a car, not even for 5 minutes.
- Offer a cooling mat.
- Brush it regularly to remove the undercoat.
- Avoid shaving it close: the coat protects against the sun.
- Watch for the signs: heavy panting, red gums, weakness.
